The city of Heriz and the surrounding towns are renowned for their excellent quality carpets and beautiful, striking designs. Located in the east of the Azerbaijan province, it is the center of carpet production for this region.

Heriz carpets are among the most famous among collectors. One of their most notable features is the large central medallion with eight vertices, present in almost all of these highly valued carpets.

Typical Colors
Dark red, brown, and beige are their most characteristic colors. Blue is used as a contrasting color or for bordering.

Texture and Quality

Because they are made with fine wool, their texture is soft and has a firm pile. Another of their highly appreciated characteristics is that they are generally very plush pieces. There is a variety of qualities, but it is important to note that the more recent ones have better quality and more durability than the older ones.

As in all cases, their quality is directly related to the number of knots per surface. The greater the number of knots, the better the design definition. Large pieces can be found, which in many cases considerably increases their value.

The warp is mainly cotton, and the weft can be wool or cotton. The Turkish knot is generally used. The pile is wool and generally of intermediate length, which gives it a very pleasant consistency to the touch.

Because Heriz carpets are among the most sought after by Western collectors, their price is medium to high.
